LiSyM-Cancer II goes HITS Open Day
Through an interactive hands-on station and many engaging conversations, our program managers helped visitors learn about the fascinating functions of the liver, interesting facts about liver cancer, and the work of our network.
On Saturday, July 11, 2026, we were represented with an interactive hands-on station at the Open House hosted by the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies with an interactive hands-on station, where we were able to provide numerous visitors with fascinating insights into the world of the liver and liver cancer research.
With great enthusiasm, our two program managers, Dr. Susan Eckerle and Elisa Brost, presented the network and engaged in conversations with interested visitors of all ages. They not only explained the diverse functions of the liver — one of the most efficient organs in our body — but also provided information about liver cancer, current research approaches, and the goals of our network.
Our interactive station was particularly popular: Visitors could examine real liver sections (provided by Dr. Seddik Hammad) under two microscopes, while illustrated books provided additional information on anatomy and diseases. Using liver stamps, the little ones could mark the liver’s position on an animated figure. The back of the figure also featured practical tips and interesting facts about liver health.
A video from the Health Knowledge Foundation, which played in the background and served as the basis for an exciting quiz, added even more interactivity. This allowed guests to test their newly acquired knowledge right away and learn more about the liver in a fun way.
Special thanks go to the HITS communications team, which helped us with the organization, and to the Klaus Tschira Youth Academy for providing the microscopes (and insect slides)!
